Sports Injuries
Treating Shin Splints, Hindfoot Fractures, Chronic Ankle Injuries and many other conditions
Coastal Foot & Ankle Center provides outstanding care to injured athletes and workers because we know what it’s like to be part of a team – whether it’s at work or on the field. Prior to becoming a foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Christopher Calcagni was a placekicker for the Oklahoma State University football team.
As an athlete, Dr. Calcagni has the added perspective that is needed to relate to injured athletes who are eager to get back to playing. His education in podiatric medicine gives him a deeper understanding of the delicate foot and ankle structure than a typical orthopedic surgeon might understand. Dr. Calcagni’s medical career has always focused on podiatry, so he is highly qualified to handle any injury to the foot or ankle.
Dr. Calcagni sees athletes of all ages, including kids.
Common sports injuries that affect the foot or ankle include:
- Achilles tendonitis
- Ankle sprain and instability
- Chronic ankle injuries
- Hindfoot fracture (heel/ankle joint)
- Ligament injuries
- Lisfranc fracture
- Metatarsal fracture
- Sesamoid fracture and sesamoiditis
- Shin splints
- Stress fracture
- Turf toe
- Toe, Foot, Ankle Fractures
Sports injuries can happen to anyone. Your feet and ankles are particularly susceptible to injury if you engage in intense physical activity like soccer, running, or basketball. No matter what the activity is, stress is felt in the bones of your feet and ankles. When these give out, it is difficult to move without discomfort. Severe injuries to the ankle or foot can make a person completely unable to walk.
Dr. Calcagni can provide prompt and effective treatment for your injured ankle or foot. Before deciding on surgery, we can try more conservative, less invasive treatment options as well.
Arthroscopy is a type of minimally invasive surgery that Dr. Calcagni can perform to repair damage to the Achilles tendon. Because this procedure only requires two or three small incisions, patients and surgeons prefer this procedure to traditional open surgery. Arthroscopy is associated with a faster return to play for many athletes with ankle injuries.
