Diabetic Foot Care
Dr. Christopher Calcagni, DPM is an expert in Diabetic Foot Care
People with diabetes often experience nerve and circulation problems that affect their lower legs and feet. It is not uncommon to experience foot ulcers, sores, and nerve compression. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of lower leg and foot amputation. If you have diabetes, your well-being depends on properly managing the condition of your feet and ankles.
At Coastal Foot & Ankle Center, Dr. Christopher Calcagni, DPM is an expert in diabetic foot care. He also sees patients with non-healing wounds.
One of the conditions that Dr. Calcagni often addresses is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). It occurs when there's a buildup of cholesterol and plaque in the arteries of the lower extremities, which results in decreased blood flow to the legs and feet. Symptoms include leg pain, particularly when walking. People with PAD are at higher risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack or stroke and, if left untreated, it could lead to gangrene and amputation. Often, lifestyle changes, a health diet and exercise are enough to treat PAD. However, if these measures fail, medication or surgery may be necessary.
Because poor circulation is the cause of most diabetic foot problems, it is important to invest in special socks, shoes, and insoles that will allow your feet to breathe while still feeling supported. Diabetic shoes are typically wider and deeper than regular shoes to make room for special diabetic insoles.
We sell diabetic shoes and insoles in our Naples office, and Dr. Christopher Calcagni can make sure you get a proper fit – which is essential for preventing sores and blisters.
Tips to prevent foot and ankle problems if you have diabetes include:
- Take time to keep your toenails trimmed properly.
- Wash your feet with mild soap and tepid water daily.
- Apply lotion and rub your feet regularly to stimulate circulation.
- Wear shoes, insoles, and socks appropriate for diabetics.
- Schedule a checkup with a podiatrist every three months.
- Don’t hesitate to call the doctor if you develop any sores, pain, or signs of infection.
